its amazing how happy the simple things in life can bring for my husband and me. we are always so happy when we are near the ocean.
he lets me shoot a million pix and doesnt mind when i go off on long walks to get good shots.
im happiest with my camera in hand and on a search for images that fit into my projects.

last but not least, my work is going beyond the technical and moving into more creative.
after saying this, i still want to learn my way around a small studio lighting setup.

i love these color images ive been working on. after all i am a chaser of the light and an observer of the dark.

its exciting to think i could find a seasoned photog to mentor me even at my age.
i think i'm beginning to threaten ppl with my work, its lonely. One person said " my progress is annoying"

5D markII

after shooting with it for about 3 weeks now , i am finally getting used to it.

loving the detail, low light potential and color it produces and its awesome to shoot with a clean sensor !
the old 5D always had a dusty sensor no matter how much i carefully cleaned it

( copperhill method ).

it also seems that the flash gives a better result with this camera. i am thrilled with it so far.
and no grip errors ( knock wood )

my day job is suffering because of this economic crisis. i'm trying to stay positive. so i decided to go up to the "tents" in NYC to shoot some Fashion Week stuff.
it was very interesting to see the dynamics of the "other" photographers, star gawkers, models, fashionistas, and celebs. there were plenty of self important stompers : )
i decided to keep my focus, and not shoot "fashion" shots and to keep it personal.
what emerged were portraits , i got people to connect to me. it was great practice. and of course the benefit was that i had beautiful people to photograph ... and once again found my niche, portraiture.

sometimes i chug along within my work thinking i am making good progress. really liking what i am producing. things happen i get some recognition, small jobs, it seems like progress .... mmmm not so much.
today i step back. i have questions. i can not let outside opinions influence my confidence. i don't want to give up. i fear the rejects. but also welcome it. i think people underestimate me, always have. this time I will not underestimate myself.
my eyes are wide open to the wrong paths.

so many thoughts in my head tonight.
the first thing i want to say is ... or maybe ask..... is it all that beneficial to post my images to flickr and other sites of the like ?
the main reason i did it in the beginning was to get my stuff out there, and to get comments from my peers-fellow shooters and other interested viewers. but after doing so for a few years now i realize, yes i see my progress, yes its been helpful. but now i think its working to distract me. some jealousies appear from people or maybe its competition cloaked in insecurity, its hurtful to me and my work.
for now i am backing off and concentrating on more focused collaborations.

i went out saturday for a few hours to shoot street alone, these images are for the most part devoid of emotion sort of standoffish.... exactly the way i was feeling in the moment.

i have been asked to write a short essay of sorts about my street stuff. at first i was a bit taken back because i don't really consider myself a street photographer.
interestingly enough i realized i was in denial. somehow in the back of my mind being a street photographer has some stigma attached to it, along with expectations to make bold social statements, raw and full of impact, but maybe they're my own.
my images are more subtle without a social statement, more of a psychological one. this exercise was eye opening, i really never put into words how my process evolves.
thanks to michael vandertol for pulling it out of me .

"Six Degrees of Photography is based on the concept of the small world phenomenon and rests on the assumption that any one photographer can be linked through his or her work and relationships to any other photographer in the world. The theory goes that if a photographer is one step away from each photographer they know, and two steps away from each photographer who is known by one of the photographers they know, then every photographer is an average of six "steps" away from each photographer on Earth.

My hope with Six Degrees of Photography is to learn more about other photographers and give each an opportunity to showcase some of their favorite work in a different way."

OMG i have waited quite some time for this recognition. When i shot this image i know it was a winner. the people, the white trench, the dark skin, all made my composition in my eyes interesting. It was planned i saw the scene and snapped it . I knew i was going to do a vignette with high contrast.
i am finding myself still. but this is proof that i am on a road, a road that is going places : )

on another note about this image, i quite like it even proud of the work i did on this b/w landscape . i guess its a statement on all the over saturated crap color digital imaging out there.i think its warping peoples perception of color photography.

wonder what eggleston thinks of it.

i have been doing hair for over 30 years... cough ... yea i'm THAT old !

but now when people ask me what i " do " i want to say photography ! but in reality i am a master hairdresser/ educator and i really should not deny that part of my life. i love doing hair, and teaching especially the group i'm teaching now. their so motivated and interested in learning.
recently i helped write an article on the "consultation " and making a connection with a client. as soon as it gets published i will post a link.

i went to the New York Photo Festival yesterday in Dumbo Brooklyn, all in all it was interesting untill i went to a lecture by Penelope Umbrico and Joachim Schmid, both these " photographers " use images from flicker for installations.

Penelope took the sun part of sunset images from thousands of images to create this installation , she claims and i quote .....

"This is a project I started when I found 2,303,087 pictures of sunsets searching the word “sunset on the Flickr site. I took just the suns from these pictures and made snapshot prints of them. "

she also claims the images she took were of the sun and could not be owned, i say then she dosen't own that installation ! is she sharing the commission ?

it was pure bullshit.

but so are a lot of things, for instance on the subject of posting on the internet ... when i view someone's photostream and i see something i like i comment , especially if i know them on a personal basis. if i don't like something or have nothing good to say i usually say nothing and make no comment .
but i upload several images to several groups some of which i actually get together with for outings, only to get minimal comments to none.
now i know my images are good or i would not post them !
wtf is up with that ?

i decided not to upload many images anymore and concentrate on MY work ..

save the best images for my website and printing.

i can get so distracted by others.
i'm learning to trust myself more.
its so unimaginable how much jealousy is in the world. including myself at times. but what i'm learning is, its human and its emotion. emotion = energy in motion, and it feeds on negativity.

but i find some people like to hurt you with it.
we as humans don't like to support one another, we're all afraid of someone getting something we don't have.

but in reality there is enough for all of us. its called abundance ( i remind myself )

since i only started this blog a few days ago , i was not able to celebrate with a post on having 11 years of sobriety.
on april 5th ( very gratefully ) i was able to manage 11 years of sobriety from alcohol.
i pray everyday for clear vision and thinking. i gave up much and gained more than i could ever imagine .

so yesterday i left work early to see what i could see. i went to the Laguardia Gardens where my good friend Sara Jones contributes her expert gardening skills....
about LaGuardia Community Garden

LaGuardia began in 1974 as a community vegetable garden on a lot just below Washington Square Park that was owned by The Jewish Cultural Center. When the land was sold in 1980 the community garden was forced to either dissolve or move. With the help of GreenThumb they found a new location just as the bulldozers were arriving. It was only one block away and they have been there now for more than 25 years.

ok, this image is not the first or last in a series of portraits that i am working on. the portrait is an interesting way of connecting with yourself and the subject.
at first i found the idea of shooting people scary to say the least ! but as i continue i am finding i can connect.
